Custom Whips From Western Stage Props!

Western Stage Props stocks a full line of both Australian and American whips, bullwhips and specialty whips. We provide information and instructional videos on whip handling and whip cracking, as well as an extensive line of professional whip care products and accessories.

The Handles:

While both our Australian & Indiana Jones Style Whips have double plaited underbellies, the Australian whip handle is about three inches longer making this whip popular for target work. The Stock Whip has a hinge that attaches the thong to the handle. Only the thong is considered in the measurement.
Measuring:

Remember, while most American whips are measured to the end of the fall, most Australian Bullwhips are measured to the keeper (end of the braiding) and then there is around 1½ ft of fall plus a cracker. So a 6 ft Australian Bullwhip is actually around 8ft with the cracker. Beginners should also note: it is harder to learn on a whip shorter than 6 ft because the fast action comes back at you. It is also difficult to learn with long whips so we recommend you start with a 6 or 8 foot whip!

Caring For Your Whip:

Your quality whip, properly used and maintained, will last you a long time! Physical damage such as hitting sharp objects, gravel, concrete, being jammed in doors, chewed by dogs, etc. (we have heard and seen them all) obviously will destroy your whip quickly. Keep in mind you don’t need excessive force to make a loud crack. A good whip handler (which you should strive to be) can attain an excellent crack with minimum force. Excessive force will cause damage to your new, very expensive whip! Leather dressing is very important! A whip that is too dry or one that is treated with the wrong dressing may lose strength and stretch out of shape. We recommend Fiebing’s Aussie Leather Conditioner (this is a natural dressing) or a dressing containing very little petroleum. Do not use neatsfoot oil or any light oils. If you are planning to store your whip you should keep it in a cool, dry environment and give it a thin coat of Fiebing’s Aussie Leather Conditioner or, if it is an American whip, Fiebing’s 4 Way Care every six months. If you use your whip often you should treat it more often. Do not drench your whips in dressing. Just coat them when they become dry, and while you are doing that, be sure to check all of the parts and make sure everything is in good condition. Falls: The only thing you may want to condition more often is the fall of the whip. It will last longer if kept well dressed at all times. Do not treat the keeper (knot attaching thong to fall) as often. It will break down and this is a key part of your whip! Falls and crackers take the brunt of the wear when a whip is used and will require replacement as needed. If the end of your fall wears off, trim it. A fall worn down to less than 12 inches on an Australian whip needs replacing (on an American, if it is less than 5 inches – replace it!) You may replace the fall yourself (just call and order it from us or return the whip and we will replace it for you. Call for repair prices. Crackers: It is important that you use the correct size crackers or poppers (which ever you choose to call them). Beginners believe that larger
crackers make louder noises. This is not true! Larger crackers tend to break down the fall faster and will only cause damage to your whip in the long run. We recommend you use our Australian-Style Crackers as they are proportionally correct and aerodynamic or, on a 10 or 12 foot, American Latigo Crackers.

Please note: Whips are not toys, adult supervision and eye protection are strongly recommended.
